Further Evidence for the Bimodal Distribution of Neutron-star Masses

چکیده
We use a collection of 14 well-measured neutron-star masses to strengthen the case that a substantial fraction of these neutron stars were formed via electron-capture (e-capture) supernovae (SNe) as opposed to Fe corecollapse SNe. The e-capture SNe are characterized by lower resultant gravitational masses and smaller natal kicks, leading to lower orbital eccentricities when the e-capture SN has led to the formation of the second neutron star in a binary system. Based on the measured masses and eccentricities, we identify four neutron stars, which have a mean post-collapse gravitational mass of ∼1.25 M , as the product of e-capture SNe. We associate the remaining 10 neutron stars, which have a mean mass of ∼1.35 M , with Fe core-collapse SNe. If the e-capture SN occurs during the formation of the first neutron star, then this should substantially increase the formation probability for double neutron stars, given that more systems will remain bound with the smaller kicks. However, this does not appear to be the case for any of the observed systems and we discuss possible reasons for this.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملContribution of High–mass Black Holes to Mergers of Compact Binaries
We consider the merging of high-mass black-hole binaries of the Cyg X–1 type, in which the O–star companion becomes a neutron star following a supernova explosion. Our estimated rate of mergers, ∼ 2× 10yr for the Galaxy, is relatively low because of the paucity of high–mass black holes. None the less, because of their high masses, these black-hole, neutron-star binaries could contribute importa...

We present here the results of Arecibo timing of PSR B1516+02B, a 7.95-ms pulsar in a binary system with a ∼ 0.17M⊙ companion and an orbital period of 6.85 days located in the globular cluster M5. The eccentricity of the orbit (e = 0.14) has allowed a measurement of the rate of advance of periastron: ω̇ = (0.0136 ± 0.0007)◦yr−1. It is very likely that the periastron advance is due to the effects...
متن کاملNeutron Star Mass Measurements. I. Radio Pulsars
There are now about fifty known radio pulsars in binary systems, including at least five in double neutron star binaries. In some cases, the stellar masses can be directly determined from measurements of relativistic orbital effects. In others, only an indirect or statistical estimate of the masses is possible. We review the general problem of mass measurement in radio pulsar binaries, and crit...
